Geneziz compared

An honest comparison of Geneziz with Raindrop.io, Karakeep, and Pocket - pricing model, where your data lives, capture sources, AI, and agent access.

The short version

These tools solve different problems, and the honest answer is that the best pick depends on what you want to own:

  • Raindrop.io - a polished cloud bookmark manager. Free tier is generous; the paid plan is billed yearly. Your library lives in Raindrop's cloud.
  • Karakeep (formerly Hoarder) - free, open source, self-hosted. You run it yourself (Docker), and your data lives in your server.
  • Geneziz - a paid desktop app ($99 once). Your library is plain Markdown files on your machine, capture covers social saves in addition to links, and your AI coding agents can query it over a local MCP server.

Raindrop.io - the polished cloud library

Raindrop is very good at its core job: collecting and organizing links in the cloud, on every device, with a generous free tier. If all you want is a bookmark list in your browser, it is a solid home for it. And if what you want is your library as plain files on your own disk - AI-organized, with capture that reaches into the social apps where saves happen, and searchable by your own tools and coding agents - that is exactly what Geneziz is built for.

Karakeep

Karakeep is free and open source, keeps your data on hardware you control, and tags saved content with AI - including local models via Ollama. The trade is operational: you deploy and maintain it (Docker) and you are the admin. The library lives in an app database rather than as plain files you can open in an editor or hand to grep and git. Whether that trade suits you is yours to weigh.

Pocket - shut down

Pocket shut down in July 2025, and its servers deleted the export window's data in October 2025. If you exported back then and still have the file, a Pocket JSON export imports with geneziz import-pocket. There is nothing further to compare - the service no longer exists.

When Geneziz fits

Pick Geneziz when you want three things at once: your saved posts and bookmarks as plain Markdown files you own, capture that reaches into the social apps where saves actually happen (X bookmarks, Instagram saved, TikTok favorites, Reddit saves), and AI coding agents that can search and even maintain the library over a local MCP server - without running a server yourself. It costs $99 once (100 bonus AI credits to start, and the 30-day money-back guarantee included); see pricing and refunds.

If you want free-and-self-hosted, use Karakeep. If you want free-to-cheap-and-cloud, use Raindrop. Both are good at what they do - and if you want your saves as local files your AI agents can query, that is Geneziz's corner.

Sources lists everything Geneziz captures. The vault shows the file format you own. AI modes covers local vs hosted vs BYOK. The overview ties it together.
